The Extensive Reading “Underwater” was written by Antoinette Moses.
This book tells the story of a teenager, Maggie, a professional swimmer, who train hard to be the best and win many medals. Her father is always working and he is hardly never watching his daughter at competitions. Her mother is always there, because she support Maggie in all her competitions and she does everything so that her daughter could be an excellent swimmer. Her mother is her coach too and she is always worried about Maggie, and for that, she is very exigent with her daughter.
Maggie has a good chance to go to an University in The Unit
ed States, but her mother didn´t want her to leave the country. In Oxford, Maggie was under a lot of pressure and after having a big discussion with her mother she decides to leave secretly. Along the way, the teenager takes the opportunity to make a visual change of her look not to be recognized. She moves to a small town, Dawlish and she changes her name.
After a while, Maggie starts to miss her family and then she decides to call a line of missing people. Her father goes to picks her up to Dawlish and, in the car, Maggie asks her father where her mother was. He replied that her mother had a breakdown when the teenager left the house and that she also left home and never returned. Upon hearing this sad news, Maggie calls the National Missing Person Helpline to try to get her mother home.
In general, I liked this book and found it interesting even though I didn't really like the ending. I think the story ended in an inconclusive way because we don't know if Maggie's mother comes home or not. I found it interesting, the fact that this book tells the story of a family that is not perfect, and that like all the others has conflicts.
In this book, the characters have very particular personalities and are very different.
Mr. Dean is a little selfish because he only thinks about himself and his work and only when Maggie disappears, he is concerned. In my opinion, Mrs. Dean is a good mother, but I think she could be less demanding for her daughter. My favorite character is Maggie, because she is a strong teenager and she is always doing her best to be a great swimmer. She is a very dedicated girl and she tries hard to not disappoint her family.
When I was reading this story I felt involved and it was like I was inside Maggie's thoughts. I think that this book, although small, has a great story and in a few pages the author wrote a story with a lot of information. In my opinion, the author writes with some particular and special details and that allows us to imagine the story.
This book conveys an important and inspiring message. One of the most important phrases in this book, in my opinion, is: "if you want to win, seriously win, then you had to make sacrifices". This means that, if we want to be good at some sport, for example, we have to change some things in our life. Some things like practicing every day. Practicing and training are the best ways to become good at some sports. I think, in life, the most important thing is not to win, but rather we demonstrate to ourselves that we are capable to doing whatever we want.
In conclusion, I recommend everyone to read this book. It's an endearing and interesting story, and when we start reading, we don't want to stop. I thought the end of this story could have been more conclusive, but I think it can be a challenge for readers to continue writing it. So, I think it would be interesting to see the path that each person choose to continue the story.
